WHCA President Weijia Jiang, senior White House correspondent for CBS News, defended the invitation, emphasizing the importance of the press corps and the president gathering in the same room—especially as the nation marks America’s 250th birthday. "There is no confusion about what this dinner is about," Jiang told CNN. "It is a reminder of what the free press means in this country."
In a departure from tradition, the association has booked famed mentalist Oz Pearlman as the headliner instead of a comedian. The choice is widely viewed as a move to sidestep the potential backlash of a "roast" format that might have deterred the president's attendance. However, the president may still be doing some roasting of his own; Lara Trump recently noted on a podcast that the president has hired joke writers and "doesn't hold anything back."
The weekend’s festivities are also shadowed by high-stakes corporate maneuvers. On Thursday, Warner Bros. Discovery shareholders approved an $81 billion takeover bid by Paramount Skydance. If the deal receives approval from the Trump administration, it would put the Trump-allied Ellison family in control of CNN, a news organization the president frequently decries. Protesters gathered outside a Paramount-hosted dinner on Thursday evening, highlighting the intersection of media ownership and political power.
While some outlets, including HuffPost, are boycotting this year’s dinner in protest of the president's media policies, the event at the Washington Hilton remains completely sold out.
