‘A Bad Noise’: Melania Trump’s ‘Traumatic’ Experience During WHCD Shooting
“A bad noise.” That was First Lady Melania Trump’s immediate reaction to hearing gunshots outside the Washington Hilton ballroom on Saturday night, according to President Donald Trump. As law enforcement rushed the stage during the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, the First Lady was seen straightening in her seat before ducking under the table and being swept away to a secure location by Secret Service agents.
The incident marked a significant shift for Melania Trump, who has largely maintained a private profile during her husband's second term. While she was not present for the 2024 assassination attempts in Pennsylvania and Florida, she was seated directly on the dais for Saturday's security breach. President Trump, speaking to CBS News’ “60 Minutes,” described the ordeal as a “rather traumatic experience” for his wife, noting that while she handled it with strength, she was clearly “very upset” by the chaos.
The shooting occurred just 18 minutes into the event, while the couple was watching a performance by mentalist Oz Pearlman. Witness accounts and video footage show the First Lady appearing to realize something was wrong before many others in the room, her usual stoicism replaced by a look of distress. Pearlman recalled hearing a sudden commotion just as he was nearing the "reveal" of his trick for the President and First Lady.
Despite the shock, Melania Trump appeared publicly in the White House briefing room just two hours later to stand by the President as he addressed the nation. Her team expressed deep gratitude for the swift action taken by the Secret Service, though sources close to the First Lady say security has been a top concern for her since the 2024 incidents.
The First Lady is expected to continue with her official duties this week, including a scheduled state visit from King Charles III and Queen Camilla. However, the events of the weekend have highlighted her long-standing anxieties regarding the safety of the inaugural parade and other high-profile public appearances.
