Gunman Targeting Trump Officials Stopped at White House Correspondents' Dinner
A would-be assassin made it inside the Washington Hilton Saturday during the White House Correspondents' Dinner, an annual gathering of journalists and political leaders, before being tackled by security, raising urgent questions about how he got that far.
Investigators say the suspect, 31-year-old Cole Allen of Los Angeles County, was armed with a shotgun, a pistol, and multiple knives when he sprinted toward a security checkpoint one floor above the basement ballroom where President Trump, cabinet members, and top congressional leaders were gathered. Security video captured him rushing the checkpoint before officers tackled him to the ground. Gunshots from the confrontation were audible inside the ballroom.
One Secret Service officer was shot during the confrontation, though he was unharmed thanks to a bulletproof vest.
Investigators say Allen sent a message to his family shortly before storming the perimeter, describing himself as a "friendly federal assassin" and naming administration officials as his targets. He also wrote about what he considered lax security at the hotel, noting he had checked in the day before the event. Allen's family alerted police about the writings, and his California home was searched following his arrest. He is expected to make his first court appearance in Washington later today.
President Trump, speaking on CBS' 60 Minutes, described being swept from the room, saying, "I wasn't worried. I understand life. We live in a crazy world."
Acting U.S. Attorney General Todd Blanche said investigators do not believe anyone else was involved, though he acknowledged significant work remains. "The system worked," Blanche said. "And that we stopped the suspect."

Nearly a year after wildfires tore through Mountain Center, the scars are still visible along the Palms to Pines Highway. Now, fire crews are working to repair those burn areas and reduce the risk of flooding, erosion and mudslides when heavy rain arrives.
