Musk vs. Altman: The High-Stakes Trial That Could Redefine OpenAI's Future

A group of regular citizens may soon decide the fate of one of the world’s most powerful artificial intelligence companies. Elon Musk’s lawsuit against OpenAI and its CEO, Sam Altman, heads to court on Monday, bringing a high-profile "tech soap opera" into the legal arena.
The trial centers on whether OpenAI executives deceived Musk and betrayed the company's original nonprofit mission. Musk, a co-founder who provided roughly $44 million in early funding, claims the shift to a for-profit structure was a breach of charitable trust. OpenAI contends the lawsuit is motivated by Musk’s jealousy after he failed to gain total control of the company in 2018.
Finding an impartial jury in Silicon Valley will be a significant challenge. Because Musk and Altman are global celebrities, the judge is calling a jury pool three times larger than average. Jurors will be questioned on their opinions regarding the "titans of tech" and AI in general to ensure they can decide the case based strictly on courtroom evidence.
The stakes go beyond a personal rivalry. OpenAI is currently preparing for a blockbuster IPO. If Musk wins, the court could force the company to revert to its previous nonprofit structure and remove Altman and President Greg Brockman from their leadership roles. Such a result would likely collapse OpenAI’s current valuation and IPO plans.
Witnesses expected to testify include some of the biggest names in technology, including Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella. The jury is expected to begin deliberations by May 12, with the final remedies to be decided by Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers.

A troubling history is coming to light in a Palm Desert husband’s death. 65-year old Vicky Kim is accused in the death of her husband — but prosecutors say she had previously faced several domestic violence cases involving him. The Riverside County District Attorney’s Office says it had secured protective orders against Kim before a judge later resolved her cases as misdemeanors, released her from custody and terminated those orders. Now, Kim is expected to be arraigned in connection with her husband’s death. Court records allege the weapon used was a flagpole.
