Des Moines Billboard Urges Supporters to Reconsider MAGA Movement
A new billboard along Southeast 14th Street in Des Moines is drawing attention and raising questions about its intent. The sign, which went up over the weekend, encourages supporters of President Donald Trump to reconsider their involvement in the “Make America Great Again” movement.
The billboard directs viewers to “Leaving MAGA,” a nonprofit founded by former Trump supporter Rich Logis. Logis describes the organization as a "destination" and a "support space" for individuals who feel they can no longer align with the movement but struggle with the loss of community. Logis, who re-evaluated his views during the COVID-19 pandemic, says the goal is to provide a "safe landing" for those experiencing doubt.
The campaign comes as recent polling from April 2026 indicates a shifting landscape. While 53% of Republicans still identify as "MAGA Republicans," discontent has grown among other key groups. President Trump’s approval among Hispanic adults has dropped 16 percentage points over the past year, and only about 10% of Black men currently approve of his handling of the cost of living—economic factors that Logis says often drive people to seek an exit from the movement.
The Des Moines billboard cost approximately $4,000 and was funded entirely by small-dollar donations. It is part of a larger national push with signs already up in cities like Austin, Spokane, and Lancaster.
Iowa Republicans have dismissed the effort. State GOP spokesperson Jade Cichy noted that Iowa remains a strong Republican state, pointing to a 13-point victory margin for Trump in previous elections and a 200,000-voter registration advantage for the GOP. Despite the pushback, Logis maintains that his group is focused on "truth and humans" rather than traditional political persuasion.
