AI Arms Race: Pentagon Taps 7 Tech Giants for Classified Warfare While Shunning Anthropic
In a move designed to transform the United States military into an "AI-first fighting force," the Department of Defense (DoD) announced on Friday a massive expansion of its classified artificial intelligence capabilities. The Pentagon has struck formal deals with seven major technology leaders—SpaceX, OpenAI, Google, Microsoft, Nvidia, Amazon Web Services, and Reflection—to deploy advanced AI tools across its most sensitive networks.
These agreements will allow the military to use frontier AI models for "lawful operational use" within Impact Level 6 and 7 environments, which handle the nation's most secret data. According to the Pentagon, the integration is aimed at maintaining "decision superiority," allowing warfighters to synthesize vast amounts of data in complex combat scenarios at speeds previously thought impossible.
The Anthropic Blacklist
Notably absent from the list is Anthropic, the creator of the Claude AI model. While Anthropic was previously the only model available on the Pentagon’s classified network, the Trump administration recently moved to sever ties. The fallout occurred after Anthropic reportedly insisted on strict safety guardrails that would limit the military's use of its technology for autonomous weaponry and mass surveillance.
The administration subsequently designated Anthropic a "supply chain risk"—a label typically reserved for companies linked to foreign adversaries. Although a federal judge in California recently blocked the government's effort to implement a total ban, the new deals with Anthropic’s rivals give the Pentagon significant leverage. With billions of dollars from the "One Big Beautiful Bill Act" now being funneled into offensive cyber operations and AI, Anthropic is currently missing out on a massive stream of federal revenue.
The Rise of GenAI.mil
The Pentagon also highlighted the explosive growth of its internal AI platform, GenAI.mil. Since its launch, the service has reached 1.3 million DoD personnel, who have used the system to generate tens of millions of prompts and deploy hundreds of thousands of agents to streamline military bureaucracy and logistics.
A Potential Thaw?
Despite the ongoing legal battles, a potential reconciliation may be on the horizon. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei recently visited the White House to meet with Chief of Staff Susie Wiles. The meeting follows the unveiling of Anthropic’s "Mythos" tool, a breakthrough that can identify complex cybersecurity threats. While the administration is intrigued by the tool’s defensive potential, critics worry it could also provide a roadmap for hackers to target government systems.
As the Pentagon shifts its architecture to avoid "vendor lock-in," the competition among these seven tech giants is expected to accelerate the deployment of AI across every domain of modern warfare.
