"Operation Pit Crew": Bronx Car Theft Ring Linked to Trinitarios Gang Dismantled After $1.2M Spree
BRONX, NY — The NYPD has announced the takedown of a sophisticated car theft ring, dubbed "Operation Pit Crew," which allegedly stole more than $1.2 million worth of vehicles and parts from "hard-working New Yorkers."
The crew, which operated with the speed and precision of a professional racing team, targeted over 250 victims across the Bronx, Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens between August 2024 and June 2025. According to Bronx District Attorney Darcel Clark, surveillance footage showed the thieves operating "like a race car pit crew in the dead of night."
High Demand for Common Parts
NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch noted that the suspects specifically targeted Honda and Toyota sedans and SUVs. These vehicles were not chosen for the high value of their individual parts, but because their rims and tires are the most common on city streets, ensuring a high demand for resale.
The stolen goods—including tires, rims, and catalytic converters—were reportedly sold in person or via Facebook Marketplace. Investigators revealed that the suspects would stash stolen vehicles in public garages in the Bronx both before and after the thefts to avoid detection.
Linked to Street Gangs
The investigation led to a 971-count indictment against 16 individuals allegedly tied to the Trinitarios street gang. Charges include auto stripping, grand larceny, and conspiracy. During a search of one defendant’s residence, police recovered firearms, ammunition, and a suitcase containing $116,000 in cash.
If convicted, the suspects face between 8 and 15 years in prison. Despite the scale of this operation, Commissioner Tisch highlighted that auto theft in the Bronx is actually down 22% so far this year.
Prevention Tips
The NYPD is encouraging vehicle owners to take proactive steps to deter similar thefts. Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny suggested using locking lug nuts on tires, noting that "if they see that lock nut, they'll move on to another car" rather than risk the time it takes to bypass it.
