90 Years Young: Nation’s Oldest TSA Officer Lawrence Santucci Honored with Surprise Birthday at John Wayne Airport
SANTA ANA, CA — While most 90-year-olds are enjoying a quiet retirement, Lawrence Santucci is arriving at John Wayne Airport before sunrise to keep the nation’s travelers safe. This week, the Orange County airport community turned the tables on the man who usually does the greeting, throwing a surprise 90th birthday celebration for the nation’s oldest Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officer.
Known for his unwavering positivity and sharp focus, Santucci has become a fixture at "SNA," where he screens passengers, mentors new hires, and assists those with special needs. "I love people. I've been a people person from day one," Santucci shared during the festivities.
A Journey Defined by Service
Santucci’s path to the TSA was anything but traditional. After a life shaped by labor on a Rhode Island farm and a stint in the U.S. Army, he spent decades in the telecommunications industry. However, following financial challenges later in life, he sought a career pivot at the age of 72.
Determined to pass the rigorous physical requirements of the job, Santucci recalled a unique training regimen: "You had to be able to carry 60 pounds. So I went to Dick's Sporting Goods, I put two 60 pounds, I was walking around with these two weights to make sure when I came in here I could. I was in great physical shape."
An Inspirational Force
His dedication has not gone unnoticed. TSA Federal Security Director Jason Pantages called Santucci "inspirational," noting that he receives more compliments from passengers than almost anyone else on the team. Colleagues described him as an uplifting force who greets every shift with a genuine smile.
For Santucci, the job is about more than just security; it’s about purpose. His daughter, Marie Pickard, noted that her father has always prioritized his country and others before himself, a trait that continues to drive him today.
And for those wondering if 90 is the year he finally hangs up the badge? Don’t hold your breath. When asked about retirement, Santucci’s response was characteristically blunt: "What am I going to do if I retire? Sit down?"

A troubling history is coming to light in a Palm Desert husband’s death. 65-year old Vicky Kim is accused in the death of her husband — but prosecutors say she had previously faced several domestic violence cases involving him. The Riverside County District Attorney’s Office says it had secured protective orders against Kim before a judge later resolved her cases as misdemeanors, released her from custody and terminated those orders.
