'Beaten to Death': Family of Eric Baker Demands Justice One Month After Fatal Mesa Police Custody Incident
It has been exactly one month since 52-year-old Eric Baker died following a violent encounter with Mesa police, and his family says they are only just beginning their fight for the truth.
On April 4, Baker was stopped by officers near the intersection of University Drive and Dobson Road for a relatively minor infraction: riding a bicycle without a working headlight. That stop quickly escalated after officers discovered an outstanding warrant for a probation violation related to a 2025 drug possession charge. What happened next is now the subject of a high-stakes internal investigation and a looming legal battle.
The Encounter: Video vs. Official Reports
While the Mesa Police Department initially reported that Baker "resisted arrest and assaulted officers," a witness video captured by a bystander at the Buenas Apartments tells a more harrowing story.
The footage shows three officers struggling with Baker on the ground. According to police, a Taser was deployed multiple times, and "physical strikes" were used to subdue him. The video appears to show Baker with a significantly bloodied face, pleading for help and telling officers he could not breathe.
"My dad did not assault one officer," Baker's daughter, Charlee, said in a statement. "He was attacked and beaten to death. I am ready to fight for my dad’s justice."
The Medical Timeline
Mesa Fire Department paramedics were called to the scene to provide medical aid before Baker was to be transported for "pre-booking medical clearance." However, Baker became unresponsive in the ambulance on the way to the hospital. Despite life-saving efforts by medical personnel, he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
As of early May, the Maricopa County Medical Examiner’s Office has not yet released a final cause of death, pending further toxicology and investigative results.
Internal Review and Officer Status
Despite the severity of the incident, the East Valley Critical Incident Response Team (EV-CIRT) did not take over the investigation. Mesa police confirmed the incident did not meet the specific criteria for an outside agency review, meaning the case is being handled entirely in-house by the department’s Critical Incident Review Board and Internal Affairs.
As of this week, the three officers involved in the arrest have already returned to full duty.
Seeking Accountability
The Baker family has officially hired a civil rights attorney to represent them as they seek the release of the full body-worn camera footage. Phoenix attorney Sean Woods, though not directly involved in this specific case, noted that video evidence is often the deciding factor in these suits. "Your eyes, you see what happens," Woods said. "Body-worn cams are not modified... that’s what the officers see, so it’s super important."
For Baker's family, the fact that a missing bicycle light led to a funeral remains a "baffling" tragedy. They are calling for the immediate release of all unedited police footage to the public.
