Still Running: Fort Smith Police Use Facebook Video to Track and Arrest Murder Suspect Derrick Guinn
FORT SMITH, AR -- Police in Fort Smith have apprehended a murder suspect after his own social media activity helped investigators pinpoint his location. Derrick Guinn, who was the subject of a massive manhunt following a deadly shooting on May 2, is now facing charges of first-degree murder and attempted murder.
Investigators revealed that while Guinn was hiding from authorities, he posted a video to a Facebook account under a different name with the caption Still running. Police used that video, which showed Guinn walking through a wooded area roughly 30 minutes after the crime, along with cellular phone tracking to narrow down his location near the Arkansas-Oklahoma state line.
The Incident on Holly Street
According to the probable cause arrest affidavit, the violence began Saturday evening at a residence on Holly Street. Guinn was reportedly at the home of his girlfriend's mother when a physical altercation broke out. Witnesses told police that Guinn began assaulting his girlfriend and her mother.
When 35-year-old Jimmy Neal attempted to intervene and stop the assault, Guinn allegedly opened fire. A single bullet passed through Neal and struck a 12-year-old boy who was standing directly behind him. Neal died from his injuries, while the juvenile was hospitalized and is expected to recover.
Tracking and Arrest
Following the shooting, Guinn fled into the woods, prompting a search that lasted more than 12 hours. The Fort Smith Police Department worked with several regional partners to establish a perimeter in the rugged terrain near the state line. Realizing that his movements were being monitored through his digital footprint, Guinn eventually turned himself in to authorities on Sunday.
Guinn is currently being held at the Sebastian County Adult Detention Center on a 500,000 dollar cash-only bond. He is scheduled to make his initial court appearance on Wednesday morning, May 6, 2026. The social media video posted during his flight from police has been entered into the case as formal evidence.
