Despite the sharp differences in policy, the meeting concluded with traditional diplomatic pleasantries. Rubio, noting the Pope’s well-known affinity for the Chicago White Sox, gifted Leo a small crystal football featuring the seal of the State Department.

Looking Ahead
The diplomatic mission continues on Friday as Rubio travels to meet with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. The meeting is expected to be equally delicate, as Meloni has previously defended the Pope against the President’s criticisms and has expressed reservations about the legality of the current Iran war.
For now, any hope of a presidential visit to the Vatican remains off the table. The Holy See has officially ruled out a papal visit to the United States for the remainder of 2026, citing the standard policy of avoiding travel to countries in the immediate run-up to national elections.
