San Diego Mosque Shooting Under Investigation as Hate Crime After Gunmen Leave Racist Writings
Federal and local law enforcement agencies have launched a comprehensive hate crime investigation after a 17-year-old homeschooled student and an 18-year-old accomplice opened fire outside San Diego's largest mosque on Monday. The teenager was a high school wrestler who had transitioned from local public schools to an online, homeschooled curriculum in 2021. Grandparents of the teenage gunman expressed deep shock and sorrow over the attack, stating they were struggling to process the enormity of the violence. The FBI San Diego Field Office is leading the evidentiary review alongside homicide detectives, collecting extensive surveillance footage from the mosque's security network and interviewing family members to map out the timeline of the radicalization. City leadership condemned the assault, emphasizing that a free society will not tolerate targeted bigotry or violence against places of worship.
