Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard Resigns to Care for Husband Following Cancer Diagnosis
WASHINGTON — Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard has submitted her resignation to President Donald Trump, announcing her decision to step down from her cabinet post at the end of next month to care for her ailing husband. In a resignation letter obtained Friday, Gabbard detailed that her husband, Abraham Williams, was recently diagnosed with a serious and extremely rare form of bone cancer. She explained that he faces significant challenges in the coming weeks and months, requiring her to step away from public service to remain by his side and fully support him through his medical battle. Her resignation will officially take effect on June 30, 2026.
Gabbard, a former Democratic congresswoman from Hawaii who broke with her party to endorse Trump during the 2024 presidential campaign, frequently occupied an outsider status within the administration. Throughout her tenure as the nation's top intelligence official, she reportedly struggled to integrate into the president's inner circle. Sources indicate she frequently clashed with fellow administration officials, including CIA Director John Ratcliffe. During pivotal moments when the administration deliberated over sensitive military actions or monitored live operational feeds in areas such as Iran and Venezuela, Gabbard was frequently absent from the room.
Her departure comes after intense speculation regarding her job security, which was magnified by her foreign policy stances. Unlike other high-ranking cabinet officials, Gabbard offered a less-than-full-throated endorsement of the president's decision to enter a war with Iran. Her public and private positioning on the conflict raised persistent questions within Washington about whether the president would retain her in the cabinet or if she would ultimately resign from her post in protest of the administration's military strategy.
Despite the underlying policy friction, Gabbard's exit is framed as a voluntary resignation rather than an administrative ouster. She becomes the fourth female cabinet member to depart the current Trump administration. Her upcoming exit follows the recent high-profile removals of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and Attorney General Pam Bondi, as well as the resignation of former Labor Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer, who stepped down amid an independent investigation into professional misconduct.

A troubling history is coming to light in a Palm Desert husband’s death. 65-year old Vicky Kim is accused in the death of her husband — but prosecutors say she had previously faced several domestic violence cases involving him. The Riverside County District Attorney’s Office says it had secured protective orders against Kim before a judge later resolved her cases as misdemeanors, released her from custody and terminated those orders. Now, Kim is expected to be arraigned in connection with her husband’s death. Court records allege the weapon used was a flagpole.
