Secret Service Shoots and Kills Armed Suspect Outside White House; Bystander Critically Injured
WASHINGTON — A gunman was shot and killed by Secret Service officers outside the White House on Saturday evening after opening fire at a security checkpoint. The violent confrontation triggered a rapid security response, critically injuring a bystander and prompting a temporary lockdown of the executive mansion.
The incident unfolded shortly after 6:00 p.m. at the intersection of 17th Street NW and Pennsylvania Avenue NW. According to law enforcement officials, an individual approached a posted Secret Service checkpoint, removed a handgun from his bag, and began firing directly at officers. Secret Service personnel immediately returned fire, striking the suspect. The gunman was transported to a regional hospital, where he later died.
Authorities have identified the deceased suspect as 21-year-old Nasire Best. A review of court documents indicated that Best had a documented history of mental health challenges and had experienced prior run-ins with the Secret Service on at least two separate occasions.
During the exchange of gunfire, an innocent bystander was struck by a bullet. The individual was rushed to an area hospital and remains in critical condition. Officials noted that an active investigation is underway to determine whether the bystander was struck by the suspect's initial rounds or caught in the subsequent crossfire when officers returned fire. No Secret Service personnel or individuals inside the White House complex were injured.
President Donald Trump was inside the White House at the time of the shooting but was not impacted or endangered by the incident. Immediately following the gunfire, the Secret Service placed the entire complex under lockdown, ordering journalists on the North Lawn to evacuate into the White House Briefing Room.
The containment area remained highly active for several hours as forensic investigators processed the scene, where remnants of medical equipment, surgical gloves, and blood-stained clothing were visible on the roadway. The Secret Service has since lifted the lockdown, though several surrounding streets remain closed to traffic as federal authorities continue their investigation.
