Severe Storms and Tornadoes Disrupt Memorial Day Weekend Travel Across the US
HOUSTON — The Memorial Day holiday weekend is off to a treacherous start as an expansive system of severe weather unleashes tornadoes, heavy hail, and flash flooding across the eastern half of the United States. The multi-state weather outbreak is fracturing holiday getaway plans, upending outdoor events, and triggering extensive delays on roads and at major airports.
The southern tier of the country took a heavy brunt of the initial storm damage. In Alabama, torrential downpours caused extreme flash flooding, with floodwaters rushing through parking lots and pouring directly into the doors of local businesses in cities like Semmes. The heavy rainfall also overwhelmed athletic facilities, completely flooding a baseball dugout during the SEC tournament in Hoover. Further inland, a damaging twister tore through East Tuscaloosa County, carving a path of destruction across Interstate 20/59, while intense winds and rain battered communities near Holly Pond.
Texas faced an equally volatile combination of weather hazards. In South Texas, relentless storms filled the streets of Corpus Christi with high water, while a severe cell pummeled parts of Dallas near the Dallas Executive Airport with heavy hail. The most dramatic sights occurred in the Texas Panhandle, where a massive, violent tornado was captured crossing Interstate 27 near Abernathy. Meanwhile, in nearby Littlefield, a powerful lightning strike ignited a massive oil fire, sending towering plumes of thick black smoke into the stormy sky.
The widespread holiday havoc quickly extended to the nation’s transportation networks and sports venues. Drivers faced dangerous high waters on flooded thoroughfares, leaving multiple vehicles entirely submerged. For air travelers, storm systems gridlocked operations at major aviation hubs, driving up delay times in Chicago, Philadelphia, Dallas, and Houston. Disappointed sports fans also faced cancellations, as the foul weather delayed a scheduled NASCAR race and forced the postponement of the baseball matchup between the New York Yankees and the Tampa Bay Rays.
Even coastal areas that escaped the direct path of the rain bands faced hazardous conditions. Across the Florida Panhandle, traditional sunny beach weather was replaced by dangerous rip current warnings, turning what is traditionally one of the busiest holiday weekends of the year into a regional washout. As meteorologists warn that additional rounds of storms are expected to persist through the holiday, travelers are being urged to exercise extreme caution and monitor changing conditions.
