Massive Russian Air Assault Targets Kyiv Following Deadly Luhansk Dormitory Strike
KYIV, Ukraine — Ukrainian emergency response crews are assessing widespread structural damage following a massive, coordinated Russian aerial assault targeting the capital city of Kyiv.
Explosions reverberated across the city during the early morning hours as a wave of Russian missiles and attack drones breached local airspace. According to municipal authorities, the overnight barrage directly impacted several residential buildings and various civilian structures scattered across the capital. Kyiv's mayor confirmed that the assault resulted in at least one fatality and left more than 20 others wounded as rescue teams combed through the debris.
The heavy bombardment follows recent warnings from both Ukrainian and United States intelligence officials regarding imminent Russian military retaliation. The escalation stems from a deadly strike that occurred in the Russian-occupied Luhansk region.
Russian President Vladimir Putin publicly condemned that incident, accusing Ukrainian forces of launching a fleet of drones directly into a college dormitory in what he categorized as a "terrorist act." Russian state media reported that the dormitory strike resulted in the deaths of 18 people.
Officials in Kyiv have firmly denied the Kremlin's accusations of intentionally targeting civilians. The Ukrainian military clarified its positions, maintaining that its forces exclusively target active Russian military infrastructure and assets directly supporting the ongoing occupation.
As emergency personnel work to restore critical services and clear rubble from residential neighborhoods in Kyiv, international observers fear the back-and-forth retaliatory strikes mark a dangerous shift in the intensity of the conflict.
