Sen. Bernie Sanders Joins Maine Democratic Candidates at University of Maine Rally
ORONO, Maine — Independent Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders traveled to Maine over the weekend, drawing hundreds of enthusiastic supporters to the University of Maine's Collins Center for the Arts for a high-profile campaign rally on Sunday.
The campaign stop is part of Sanders' national "Fight Oligarchy" tour, an ongoing cross-country effort by the senator to stump for progressive and Democratic candidates. On Sunday, Sanders stood shoulder-to-shoulder with Maine’s Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Graham Platner and Democratic gubernatorial candidate Troy Jackson.
During the event, all three speakers focused heavily on progressive economic platforms, sharply criticizing the disproportionate influence of large corporations and calling for higher taxes on the nation's billionaires. Jackson and Platner tailored their messages directly to working-class Mainers, reaffirming their absolute support for labor unions, universal health care, and robust federal and state funding increases for public schools.
Sanders argued that the unfettered political and economic power of wealthy companies is a primary driver behind the current affordability crisis squeezing families across the United States. He warned that billionaire-funded super PACs are actively trying to control the composition of the United States Congress.
The candidates also touched on international issues, with U.S. Senate candidate Graham Platner emphasizing that American taxpayer dollars should be prioritized for building domestic infrastructure, such as schools and hospitals, rather than funding bombs for military conflicts abroad in places like Gaza and Iran.
The political push in the state is set to continue immediately. Sanders, Platner, and Jackson are scheduled to travel south to hold their next major campaign rally tonight in Portland.
