LOVELAND, Colorado — For many performers, the parking lot of a retail center might seem like an unlikely venue for a theatrical masterpiece. But for Kevin Venardos, the asphalt lot at the Promenade Shops at Centerra in Loveland, Colorado, represents the ultimate stage for his hard-earned personal redemption.
Once a premier ringmaster for Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey’s "Greatest Show on Earth," Venardos nearly lost everything after leaving the world-famous company. Following a series of poor business decisions, financial ruin, and a devastating bankruptcy that left him in an empty apartment with no furniture, Venardos found himself at rock bottom in his early 30s. Today, his independent, animal-free traveling show, the Venardos Circus, has successfully wrapped up its latest multi-week engagement, demonstrating what can happen when a dreamer refuses to give up.
A Bold Vision Built from Nothing
The traveling show is a complete reinvention of the classic American circus tradition, operating as a story-driven, Broadway-style experience centered on narrative, live music, and pure human artistry. It is an approach Venardos engineered out of sheer necessity when his career collapsed. He initially launched the concept using a conceptual pitch video filmed inside a single rented tent to sell investors and municipalities on a circus that did not yet exist.
Twelve years later, the venture has blossomed into a thriving enterprise. The circus now operates two separate nationwide touring companies, moving its custom-crafted Italian big top tents across the United States to bring intimate, high-energy performances directly to local communities.
Stars Under the Big Top
The magic of the production is carried out by a tight-knit international ensemble of world-class acrobats, aerialists, and comedians. Among them is Phoenix Baisa, whose daily responsibilities highlight the intimate, community-driven nature of the show. Baisa begins her shift working outside as a circus greeter, welcoming patrons and guiding families to their seats. Once the lights dim, however, she transforms into the centerpiece of the performance, starring as Alice in a whimsical, gravity-defying adaptation of Alice in Wonderland.
Rehearsing alongside fellow performer Angel Ramos, Baisa explained that the grueling schedule and artistic rigor are fueled by the cast's shared passion. For Venardos, watching his performers thrive and observing the joy in the audience provides the ultimate vindication for the hardships he endured.
Spurring the Next Generation of Dreamers
Reflecting on his journey from a naive 22-year-old Ringling ringmaster to a seasoned independent producer, Venardos noted that hitting rock bottom was a painful but necessary catalyst for his current success. He described his past struggles as a tool that carved out room in his heart for genuine gratitude.
With the Loveland run officially concluding on Monday night, the production crews are packing up the big top and splitting into their respective national touring units to hit the road for their upcoming summer dates. For Venardos, the true measure of his redemption is no longer found in the massive arenas of his youth, but in the intimate crowds of the big top, where he hopes his story inspires local families to pursue their own unconventional dreams.
