Minneapolis Prince Mural Celebrates Anniversary as Global Destination for Music Fans
MINNEAPOLIS — No trip to Minneapolis is complete without stopping by the iconic Prince mural located directly across from the historic First Avenue nightclub. Four years after its official unveiling on June 2, 2022, the massive piece of public artwork continues to serve as a global gathering hub for fans traveling from around the world to pay tribute to the late musical icon. While the finished masterpiece appears seamless, the story behind its creation involves a grueling seven-year journey marked by funding rejections, corporate philanthropy, and a global search for the perfect artistic vision.
The concept for the monument actually originated before Prince's sudden passing in 2016. Sharon Smith-Akinsanya, who worked closely with the musician during the 1990s, presented him with the idea of a public tribute. Prince explicitly rejected the concept of a traditional bronze statue, noting with his trademark wit that statues are notoriously tough on capturing faces accurately. However, he gave his enthusiastic blessing to a large-scale mural. Tragically, Prince passed away before the project could get off the ground, leaving Smith-Akinsanya more motivated than ever to turn his vision into a reality to honor the icon.
Securing the necessary resources proved far more difficult than organizers initially anticipated. Smith-Akinsanya assumed fundraising would be effortless given Prince's legendary status, but state lawmakers flatly denied her initial requests for public funding. Refusing to abandon the project, she pivoted directly to the Minnesota business community. Corporate giants including Target, Best Buy, and the Minnesota Twins baseball franchise ultimately stepped up, collectively donating 500,000 dollars to fully fund the heavy operational lift.
With funding secured, local art community leader Joan Vorderbruggen coordinated the complex task of designing the mural. An 18-person selection committee launched a comprehensive global search to select the perfect painter. The committee worked hand-in-hand with Prince's surviving family members to secure their official blessing, carefully vetting historical photographs and concepts to ensure the specific imagery authentically captured his essence and various musical eras.
Seven years after the initial planning phases began, painters finally put brushes to the wall in May 2022. The physical painting process required 23 days of continuous, precise labor before the grand unveiling. Today, the monument stands as a permanent gift to the city of Minneapolis, serving as a powerful visual reminder of why the legendary artist chose to stay in his home state of Minnesota despite having the resources to live anywhere in the world.
