International Space Station Crew Ordered to Safe Haven Following Worsening Russian Module Air Leak

Five astronauts aboard the International Space Station were ordered into an emergency safe haven posture on Friday after a persistent air leak on the Russian side of the orbital laboratory rapidly worsened. The urgent precautionary directive from Mission Control in Houston required the international crew to don their spacesuits and shelter inside a docked SpaceX spacecraft, highlighting the escalating challenges of managing aging infrastructure in low Earth orbit.

The safety alert was triggered at 9:04 AM Eastern Time when NASA flight controllers observed that the leak rate within the transfer tunnel—a compartment connecting Russia's Zvezda service module to a cargo docking port—had effectively doubled. The air loss escalated from roughly one pound of escaping atmosphere per day to two pounds per day. Out of an abundance of caution, NASA instructed all four members of the SpaceX Crew-12 mission along with a fifth American astronaut to enter the Crew Dragon Freedom capsule and execute emergency procedure three decimal four to establish a safe haven.

The crew ordered into the capsule included NASA astronauts Jessica Meir and Jack Hathaway, European Space Agency astronaut Sophie Adenot, and Russian cosmonaut Andrey Fedyaev, alongside NASA astronaut Chris Williams. Meanwhile, two Russian cosmonauts remained on the station to execute repairs. The tension intensified when Russian specialists considered using a mechanical saw to gain better access to a suspected crack, a method that U.S. flight controllers felt posed an elevated risk to the surrounding module.

Ultimately, the dangerous repair operation was paused. Roscosmos flight controllers elected to stop the cutting and patching process so that engineers on the ground could assess fresh structural data and measurements. Approximately two hours after the initial scramble, NASA rescinded the safe haven order, allowing the five sheltering astronauts to exit the spacecraft, remove their suits, and resume normal orbital operations.

While Roscosmos issued a statement maintaining that the pressure onboard the station is stable and that the incident never posed an immediate threat to the crew, the tunnel leaks have been a source of growing friction between the two space agencies since they were first detected in late 2019. Former NASA astronaut Steve Robinson noted that while the leak has been a slow venting of air into the vacuum of space, any leak is a significant concern in orbit. The orbital outpost is slated to remain operational through at least 2030, but the recurring structural micro-fissures underscore the complex technical realities of maintaining a laboratory that has been continuously crewed since the year 2000.
