U.S. and Iran Exchange Strikes Overnight as Tensions Escalate in the Gulf

The United States and Iran traded military strikes overnight, after President Trump ordered what the military described as a defensive response to Iran shooting down an American Apache helicopter over the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran fired back, launching missiles at a U.S. base in Jordan and drone attacks against American forces in Bahrain and Kuwait, according to Iranian state media. Iran's Revolutionary Guard claimed strikes against 21 targets across the Gulf region.

The U.S. strikes targeted radar, missile, and command and control sites near the Strait of Hormuz. House Speaker Mike Johnson said the operation was "targeted strikes to their radar, missile, and command and control sites, and it is defensive in nature." U.S. Central Command said the mission was complete and called it a proportional response to what it described as unjustified Iranian aggression.

The Apache helicopter had been patrolling the strait to protect commercial shipping when, according to a U.S. official, it was hit by an Iranian drone and crashed into the water. Both pilots were rescued safely, including through what officials described as a first-of-its-kind recovery using an unmanned U.S. Navy boat. President Trump confirmed the pilots were unharmed, saying simply, "Nobody injured."

Democrats on Capitol Hill raised concerns about where this is heading. Rep. Jim Himes of Connecticut said, "Retaliation is going to just set diplomacy back that much further." The strikes come at a sensitive moment. Just before the latest exchange, President Trump said the two countries were "in the final throes of what will be a very, very good deal," suggesting nuclear negotiations had been progressing. How those talks hold up now remains to be seen.
