Orlando Marks 10th Anniversary of Pulse Nightclub Tragedy With Moving Portrait Exhibit
ORLANDO, Florida — The Central Florida community is coming together to commemorate a solemn milestone as Friday marks the tenth anniversary of the Pulse nightclub tragedy that claimed forty-nine lives. Ahead of the official day of remembrance, a deeply moving and unique art exhibition has opened inside Orlando City Hall to provide a space for reflection, collective grieving, and enduring tribute.
The display, titled Created in Community: Portraits of Pulse, is located in the Terrace Gallery within the main lobby of City Hall. In stark contrast to a colorful introductory sign and floral arrangements at the entrance, the interior of the gallery features a deeply solemn layout of black, white, and shades of gray. The collection is comprised of forty-nine individual portraits representing each of the lives taken during the mass shooting a decade ago on June 12, 2016.
The creation of the portraits was an intensely collaborative effort that began shortly after the attack. A local artist based in Seminole County originally sketched and outlined each image before providing them directly to the victims' families, friends, and community volunteers to complete using a paint-by-numbers framework. Visitors to the gallery will notice that several of the portraits remain intentionally unfinished with incomplete lines, a choice made deliberately by grieving family members that the city preserved to symbolize lives cut tragically short.
The collection originally functioned as a traveling memorial across the region starting in 2017 before being permanently acquired for long-term preservation. Municipal leaders emphasized that the gallery provides a vital alternative space for citizens to pay their respects alongside the original nightclub site. The exhibition will remain open to the public daily through August 23, 2026.
The City Hall exhibition serves as the prelude to Friday's official municipal remembrance ceremony, which is scheduled to take place at the First United Methodist Church of Orlando. The commemorative event will include special musical tributes from local organizations, including the Orlando Gay Chorus, and will culminate in a traditional candlelight vigil where the names of all forty-nine victims will be read aloud.

Nearly a year after wildfires tore through Mountain Center, the scars are still visible along the Palms to Pines Highway. Now, fire crews are working to repair those burn areas and reduce the risk of flooding, erosion and mudslides when heavy rain arrives.
