California Governor Gavin Newsom Accuses President Trump of Political Targeting Amid Federal DOJ Investigation
SACRAMENTO, California — California Governor Gavin Newsom announced on Monday that he and his wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom, are the subjects of an active federal investigation by the Department of Justice. The high-profile Democrat and vocal critic of the current administration leveled sharp accusations against President Donald Trump, claiming the investigation was engineered for purely political reasons. Newsom asserted that the federal probe was launched in direct response to his frequent public clashes with the administration and his consideration of a presidential bid in 2028.
The White House has referred all inquiries regarding the matter to the Justice Department for official comment, though the Department of Justice has declined to make any public statements at this time. According to two sources familiar with the developing investigation, the federal probe is being run directly out of Sacramento. The operation is reportedly under the control and supervision of Eric Grant, the United States Attorney for the Eastern District of California.
Newsom shared the breaking development in a series of fiery video statements posted to his official social media channel on X. The governor stated that federal agents have recently knocked on the doors of family friends and former employees, arguing that investigators are actively trying to find a crime rather than addressing a legitimate infraction.
