United States and Iran Reach Historic Agreement to End War and Reopen Strait of Hormuz
WASHINGTON — In a historic development that has sent shockwaves through global political and financial markets, the United States and Iran have reached a tentative agreement to end their active conflict. Both Washington and Tehran are claiming victory ahead of a formal diplomatic meeting scheduled for Friday to officially sign the accord, which will trigger the immediate reopening of the heavily contested Strait of Hormuz.

Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister announced on state media that the United States was forced to request a ceasefire, asserting that all of Iran's core diplomatic positions were successfully incorporated into the final text. Skepticism remains high within the Islamic Republic; a former Iranian military commander told NBC News in Tehran that there is little baseline trust in the American president, pointedly noting that Donald Trump previously ordered the killing of Iran's Supreme Leader.
The peace framework faces significant resistance from Israel, a key U.S. ally. Israel's right-wing Minister of National Security issued a blunt statement declaring that Trump's agreement does not bind Israeli military actions. The diplomatic breakthrough followed a highly volatile 24 hours in which Israel launched targeted airstrikes in Beirut, Lebanon, aiming at Iran-backed Hezbollah assets following recent drone provocations. President Trump publicly rebuked the operation, stating the strike should not have happened, and international mediators have since confirmed that Lebanon is officially included in the sweeping ceasefire parameters.
The friction has exposed deep cracks between the U.S. and Israeli leadership. In late-night interviews, President Trump told The New York Times that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is a very difficult person to work with, while reportedly telling Axios that he explicitly informed Netanyahu that he lacks proper judgment. Despite the intense regional pushback, international observers across Europe, Asia, and the Middle East have welcomed the sudden de-escalation, triggering an immediate drop in global crude oil prices and a major relief rally across international stock exchanges.
