Boyle Heights Warehouse Fire Continues Burning as Air Quality Concerns Spread Across Southern California
A state of emergency remains in effect in the Boyle Heights neighborhood of Los Angeles as firefighters continue battling a massive warehouse fire that has been burning for several days.
The fire started Wednesday at a cold-storage facility containing an estimated $85 million worth of frozen food products, including meat, pork and fish. Officials say the blaze has been contained to roughly half of the building, but crews continue working to extinguish stubborn hotspots while monitoring the structure for signs of collapse.
Residents living near the facility have voiced concerns about smoke, air quality and potential health impacts. Many say they have experienced coughing, headaches and difficulty spending time outdoors.
Fire officials estimate smoke from the fire could linger for several more days as crews aggressively work to extinguish the remaining flames. The facility's operator has brought in additional firefighting equipment, including high-powered water cannons and specialized support resources.
Meanwhile, community organizations and local officials have distributed air purifiers, masks and other supplies to affected residents.
The fire's impact on air quality extends beyond Los Angeles County. An air quality alert remains in effect across portions of Southern California, including parts of the Inland Empire and coastal communities.
Closer to home, a windblown dust advisory remains in effect across the Coachella Valley through at least this afternoon. Winds of up to 55 miles per hour could create hazardous air quality conditions in areas including Cathedral City, Mecca and Indio.
Air quality officials are urging residents to limit outdoor activities, keep windows closed when possible and take precautions to reduce exposure to dust and smoke.
