Suspected Arson Fire Destroys Four Amazon Electric Delivery Vans Near OHSU in Southwest Portland
PORTLAND, Oregon — A destructive early morning fire heavily damaged a localized staging lot in Southwest Portland, completely destroying four specialized electric delivery vehicles. The blaze broke out shortly before 2:30 a.m. on Monday, June 22, 2026, in a parking lot directly adjacent to an Oregon Health & Science University building and a nearby Rivian dealership and service center. Local authorities and fire investigators have officially determined that the fire was intentionally set, launching a comprehensive joint arson investigation into the incident.
Emergency dispatchers initially received reports of a potential vegetation or brush fire with trees burning near Southwest Arthur Street and Southwest 6th Avenue. However, when the first engine from Portland Fire & Rescue arrived on the scene, crews discovered multiple Amazon Prime electric delivery vans fully engulfed in towering flames. The intensity of the burning vehicles prompted commanders to immediately upgrade the incident from a routine vegetation dispatch to a full commercial-level fire response, rapidly drawing additional engines, ladder trucks, a heavy rescue unit, and multiple chief officers to contain the perimeter.
The specific design of the delivery vehicles created a unique tactical challenge for the responding fire crews. Because all four of the impacted vans were cutting-edge electric models equipped with large lithium-ion battery systems, standard chemical or water suppression methods were insufficient to instantly extinguish the internal core. Firefighters were forced to establish defensive boundaries to protect nearby structures, trees, and un-ignited vehicles, ultimately allowing the compromised battery cells to completely consume their own fuel and burn themselves out. Crews remained stationed at the parking lot for roughly 90 minutes to ensure the intense heat remained entirely contained to the four original shells.
The specialized nature of the burning battery materials prompted officials to issue localized warnings, describing the thick smoke rising from the parking lot as highly toxic and advising nearby residents and onlookers to maintain a safe distance. Fortunately, Portland Fire & Rescue confirmed that no injuries were reported among civilians or emergency personnel during the overnight operation, and administrators stated there is no ongoing chemical or physical danger to the public.
