According to law enforcement sources briefed on the multi-agency investigation, one of the primary ransom notes sent by the captors shortly after her February abduction stated that she had died. The newly revealed details have shed light on the high-stakes, behind-the-scenes efforts by federal and local authorities to track the perpetrators while keeping critical case details shielded from the public eye.
The communication was delivered to media outlets and law enforcement via email in February, arriving shortly after an initial, credible demand for millions of dollars in cryptocurrency. Investigators from both the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Pima County Sheriff's Department quickly authenticated both messages, tracing them to the same digital origin point and noting that the sender possessed non-public, specific details about the layout of Guthrie's home. In the second note, the kidnappers explicitly stated that they did not intend to harm the elderly woman, but claimed she passed away shortly after being taken from her residence in the Catalina Foothills, just outside Tucson, Arizona.
The text of the secondary message reportedly informed the family that they would not receive further communication and stated that the victim was buried with nature. CNN and a local Tucson television station received copies of the notes months ago but collectively agreed to honor a direct confidentiality request from the FBI and the Guthrie family to keep the contents private. Former New York Police Department Deputy Commissioner of Intelligence and Counterterrorism John Miller explained that maintaining operational secrecy was vital for law enforcement, as it allowed detectives to preserve unpublicized details to validate any potential future contacts from the abductors.
Nancy Guthrie was initially reported missing on February 1, 2026, after failing to attend a scheduled virtual church service. Evidence collected at her home, including bloodstains near the entrance and doorbell camera footage of an armed, masked suspect, quickly prompted authorities to reclassify the missing persons case as a criminal kidnapping investigation. Despite the dark revelations contained within the February note, the Pima County Sheriff's Department maintains that the search remains an active and ongoing investigation.
