LONG BEACH, Calif. — As peak summer travel brings thousands of weekly visitors to the California coastline, a new environmental data study has identified the specific beaches where tourists voice the most frustration over litter, debris, and poor sanitation. Conducted by the sustainable drinkware brand Just Bottle, the analysis scraped thousands of Tripadvisor reviews across California coastal destinations to measure the density of cleanliness complaints rather than raw volume, offering a direct reflection of the actual visitor experience.
According to the final data, City Beach in Long Beach captured the top spot as the least clean beach in the state based on review density. The study tracked specific keywords such as trash, dirty, smelly, filthy, and cigarette butts, identifying that City Beach recorded a staggering 417.6 litter-related mentions per 1,000 reviews. Out of 91 total reviews logged for the location, 38 specific complaints focused on refuse, with trash and dirty emerging as the most frequent descriptions. Furthermore, only 27.47 percent of visitors rated City Beach as excellent, which marks the lowest customer satisfaction proportion among the state's top ten lowest-ranked beaches.
Los Angeles County's Dockweiler State Beach ranked as the second most complained-about coastal spot, generating 236.8 litter mentions per 1,000 reviews, with guests frequently citing garbage left behind near the shoreline. Cowell's Beach in Santa Cruz followed closely in third place at 223.7 mentions per 1,000 reviews, drawing numerous poor and terrible marks due to accumulated beach debris. El Capitan State Beach in Goleta and Santa Cruz Main Beach rounded out the top five worst-performing locations, with both destinations heavily criticized by reviewers for discarded bottles, wrappers, and unmanaged waste.
Other notable coastal spots making the top ten list included Rosie's Dog Beach, also located in Long Beach, which ranked sixth with 150.2 complaints per 1,000 reviews. Despite the frequent mentions of trash and filth, Rosie's Dog Beach maintained a 66.67 percent excellent rating, the highest satisfaction score in the bottom ten. Gray Whale Cove State Beach in Half Moon Bay, Bolsa Chica State Beach in Huntington Beach, Seacliff State Beach in Aptos, and Doheny State Beach in Dana Point finalized the ranking. Seacliff State Beach stood out uniquely for its odor problems, with the keyword smelly accounting for half of its total negative mentions.
Just Bottle co-founder Millie Mallett explained that evaluating public complaints by review density rather than raw numbers provides a far more honest look at how pollution actively impacts tourism. Mallett noted that higher summer foot traffic can rapidly amplify minor trash issues into severe environmental concerns, directly damaging a destination's long-term reputation. The study highlights that even small amounts of daily plastic waste, fishing lines, and consumer wrappers left behind by beachgoers can quickly accumulate, underscoring the urgent need for heightened public waste awareness and improved municipal collection infrastructure.
