Supreme Court Upholds Birthright Citizenship, Trump Calls for Congress to Change It
The U.S. Supreme Court ruled Tuesday to uphold birthright citizenship, striking down President Trump's executive order that sought to restrict it.
The ruling keeps in place the longstanding understanding that anyone born in the United States is a citizen, even if their parents are not.
Trump responded on social media, calling the decision "too bad for our country." He's now calling on Congress to do away with birthright citizenship through legislation, saying he would support the effort.
For now, the constitutional protection remains unchanged, meaning children born on U.S. soil continue to be recognized as citizens regardless of their parents' immigration status.
