Dangerous Heatwave Blankets U.S. Ahead of Holiday Weekend, Prompting Travel and Power Grid Warnings
WASHINGTON, D.C. — A dangerous and widespread heatwave is blanketing most of the United States, forcing millions of Americans to contend with extreme temperatures just as the Fourth of July holiday weekend begins.
On Thursday, July 2, 2026, nearly 70 percent of the nation recorded high temperatures above 90 degrees. The extreme weather is hitting the East Coast and stretching deep into the Midwest, with multiple major cities bracing for temperatures to top 100 degrees.
In the nation's capital, where millions are expected to gather for holiday activities, temperatures are projected to climb into the triple digits today and potentially remain that high through the weekend.
The prolonged, intense heat is already impacting infrastructure and travel:
Transit Delays: Amtrak has issued warnings to commuters that the extreme heat could cause system-wide travel delays.
Power Grid Strain: Massive energy demand has raised serious concerns about utility infrastructure. In New York City, the mayor has suggested that residents keep their indoor thermostats set to 78 degrees to prevent air conditioners from overloading and tripping the power grid.
Because Independence Day is a holiday traditionally celebrated outdoors, health officials are urging the public to prioritize safety over the next couple of days. The primary recommendations for anyone stepping outside are to stay hydrated, limit direct sun exposure as much as possible, and pay close attention to physical warning signs.
Experts warn that feeling out of sorts can be an early indicator of heat exhaustion, which can quickly become a serious health problem if ignored. The stifling conditions are expected to persist throughout the entire holiday weekend.

A troubling history is coming to light in a Palm Desert husband’s death. 65-year old Vicky Kim is accused in the death of her husband — but prosecutors say she had previously faced several domestic violence cases involving him. The Riverside County District Attorney’s Office says it had secured protective orders against Kim before a judge later resolved her cases as misdemeanors, released her from custody and terminated those orders. Now, Kim is expected to be arraigned in connection with her husband’s death. Court records allege the weapon used was a flagpole.
