Russia’s latest attack on Kyiv was exceptionally deadly – here is why
A major Russian assault on Kyiv has left at least 30 people dead, marking one of the deadliest attacks on the Ukrainian capital since the start of the war and highlighting the evolving intensity of Moscow’s aerial campaign.
The strike involved a combination of ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, loitering munitions, and jet-powered drones, many of which targeted residential buildings across the city. Ukrainian officials said around 25 sites were hit, with significant destruction in civilian neighborhoods, including a residential building that housed dozens of apartments.
Military analysts say the use of newer jet-powered drones, which can travel at speeds of up to 500 kilometers per hour, has made interception more difficult for Ukrainian air defenses. These drones require high-end missile systems or fighter jets to shoot down, placing additional strain on already limited defensive resources.
Ukrainian officials also noted that a large proportion of the missiles used in the attack were ballistic, further complicating interception efforts. Some advanced weapons, including hypersonic cruise missiles, were also reported to have been deployed.
While Ukraine’s defense forces claim to have intercepted more than 90% of incoming cruise missiles and drones, the volume and mix of weapons still allowed significant damage to reach the capital.
The Ukrainian government has warned that its stockpile of interceptor missiles is under pressure and has appealed to allied nations for additional air defense support. Officials say continued shortages could make it more difficult to counter future large-scale attacks.
Russian officials described the strike as targeting military infrastructure, but Ukrainian authorities and independent assessments say civilian areas were heavily impacted. President Volodymyr Zelensky has condemned the attacks, calling them deliberate strikes against civilian infrastructure.
Search and rescue operations continued following the attack, with additional victims feared trapped in damaged buildings. Officials also credited early warnings and widespread sheltering for helping reduce the potential death toll.

Nearly a year after wildfires tore through Mountain Center, the scars are still visible along the Palms to Pines Highway.
