White House Upgrades Front Door Security Amid New Safety Measures
The White House is upgrading security at its front entrance as officials move forward with improvements designed to strengthen protections around the presidential residence.
A White House official told CNN that work is underway at the North Portico entrance, with the project expected to take several months. The upgrades are focused on security enhancements and have been supported by the U.S. Secret Service, according to sources familiar with the project.
The work is taking place as crews continue exterior repairs at the White House, including restoration of columns requested by President Donald Trump. Officials say the front door project is separate from other cosmetic changes and is intended specifically to improve security.
Additional security measures are also being considered, including proposed fencing around Lafayette Park on the north side of the White House. The plan, submitted by the U.S. Secret Service, the Executive Office of the President, and the Department of the Interior, would create a more permanent security system to replace temporary barriers currently used during certain events and presidential movements.
Officials say the proposed fencing would allow for a more flexible response to changing security needs. The project would require approval from multiple federal agencies, with phased construction potentially beginning in 2027.
The security improvements come after several recent threats targeting President Donald Trump, including reported assassination attempts and other security concerns cited by administration officials.
The North Portico security upgrades are expected to be completed around mid-September.
