House GOP Unveils $95 Billion Defense and Election Funding Plan
House Speaker Mike Johnson has unveiled a $95 billion emergency funding proposal that would boost defense spending, provide aid to farmers and support election initiatives championed by President Donald Trump.
The package includes up to $73 billion for the Pentagon and national security programs, including funding to replenish resources used during the recent conflict involving Iran.
The proposal also allocates up to $12 billion in agricultural assistance for farmers affected by ongoing trade disputes and up to $10 billion in grants to states to support implementation of Trump's SAVE America Act, which focuses on election security measures.
The legislation is expected to face significant hurdles in Congress. Some Republicans have expressed concern about adding billions of dollars to the national debt without offsetting spending cuts.
Earlier discussions had included proposals to pay for the package through anti-fraud measures and reductions in certain government programs. However, Republican leaders ultimately excluded those provisions after determining they lacked sufficient political support and could jeopardize the bill's chances in the Senate.
Rep. Warren Davidson criticized the proposal on social media, warning against increasing federal borrowing, while Senate Majority Leader John Thune has cautioned that including healthcare spending cuts could complicate Senate passage.
Johnson developed the proposal following weeks of discussions with House Republicans and White House officials. The measure will still need to advance through the legislative process before reaching the House floor.
