Nevada Wildfire Forces Evacuations as Severe Weather Brings Flooding, Lightning and Power Outages

A fast-moving wildfire near Reno, Nevada, is forcing tens of thousands of residents to evacuate as firefighters battle flames spreading through dry, windy conditions.

The Hawk Fire has burned more than 13,000 acres and remained at zero percent containment as crews worked from the ground and air. Videos from the area showed flames and thick smoke along roadways as the fire moved rapidly through the Sierra foothills.

Washoe County officials urged residents in evacuation areas to leave when they can.

“If you can get out now, I would ask you please to do that,” Washoe County Sheriff Darin Balaam said.

At least one hospital in the region evacuated patients as the fire approached. Officials also urged residents to follow evacuation orders and give firefighters and other first responders room to work.

The wildfire was part of a broader pattern of dangerous weather affecting communities across the country.

Heavy rain and strong winds hit parts of Florida and Pennsylvania, with flooding reported in some areas. In Florida, police said a mother and her 2-year-old son were killed after being struck by lightning.

In Gary, Indiana, some residents were still without electricity nearly two weeks after severe storms caused widespread damage. Power was not expected to be fully restored for some customers until Tuesday.

Back in Nevada, emergency crews continued working to gain ground against the Hawk Fire as officials urged residents to take evacuation orders seriously.

“Please allow our firefighters and our first responders the ability to do their jobs and take the evacuation order seriously,” Reno Police Chief Corey Solferino said.
