Candidates Outline Priorities in California’s 47th Assembly District Race
As California’s June primary election draws closer, candidates running for the state’s 47th Assembly District are outlining their priorities for voters across the Coachella Valley.
The district includes communities such as Palm Springs, La Quinta, Rancho Mirage and Desert Hot Springs.
Democratic candidate Leila Namvar says her campaign is focused on affordable housing, healthcare, and education. Namvar, who describes herself as an immigrant and mother, says she wants the state to prioritize attainable housing and policies aimed at improving everyday life for local residents.
Fellow Democrat Jason Byors says cost of living remains one of the district’s biggest challenges. Byors says he supports increasing wages and expanding healthcare access, particularly through Medi-Cal, while also speaking out against federal immigration enforcement tactics that he says create fear in local communities.
Republican incumbent Greg Wallis is seeking another term after representing the district for the past four years. Wallis says his focus remains on lowering costs for Californians by reducing regulations that he believes increase expenses for businesses and consumers. He also addressed immigration concerns, saying he supports cooperation between local and federal law enforcement when dealing with convicted individuals in the country illegally while opposing actions that create fear among law-abiding residents.
Voters in the district will decide the race during the June primary election as campaigns continue ramping up across the region.

Nearly a year after wildfires tore through Mountain Center, the scars are still visible along the Palms to Pines Highway. Now, fire crews are working to repair those burn areas and reduce the risk of flooding, erosion and mudslides when heavy rain arrives. The work includes fire-line suppression repairs, water bars and other measures designed to slow rainwater and keep burned soil from washing away.
