Performer Steven Skeels Brings His Life Story to the Stage in “Dreamer” – One-Night Show Set for April 6
On this week’s Desert Entertainment, Tod Macofsky sat down with singer, songwriter, and producer Steven Skeels, who is bringing his heartfelt one-man show, Dreamer, to Palm Springs for a one-night-only performance on April 6.
Dreamer is a deeply personal journey through Skeels’ life in entertainment—starting as a child performer in Evansville, Indiana, and spanning decades of music, theatre, and storytelling. “I’m the baby of ten, and they were my first audience,” Skeels recalled. “I always needed someone to perform for.”
After getting his big break in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Starlight Express—despite having no prior skating experience—Skeels launched a career that would take him across the U.S. and Europe. He even gifted his skates to a longtime fan and hasn’t laced up since.
Now living between New York and Palm Springs, Skeels finds inspiration in the desert’s welcoming creative community. “There’s a magic to this place. I feel grounded, centered, and incredibly creative when I’m here,” he said.
The April 6 Dreamer concert also serves as a fundraiser for Skeels’ upcoming TV pilot Never Too Late, inspired by a life-changing car accident that prompted him to reevaluate his path. “This is my third act, and I want it to mean something,” he said.
He’s already completed the pilot and the final episode and is working to secure funding to begin production in the fall. The series, which will tackle adult themes, is being pitched to streaming platforms like Netflix or HBO.
Steven is also co-writing a musical with Terry Ray called Freaky Pride Day, a comedy about two brothers—one gay, one straight—who switch lives and perspectives. The pair hopes to bring the show to life in the next year or two.
