The Merry Widow Operetta Brings Comedy and Classic Waltz to Palm Canyon Theater
The Palm Canyon Theater is preparing to host a production of The Merry Widow, brought to the stage by Coachella Valley Classical Voices. The production, which runs from May 22nd to the 24th, 2026, offers a lighter alternative to traditional opera by focusing on comedic timing and accessible, soaring music.
Director Doug Nagel and choreographer Keith Mottola shared details about the upcoming show, noting that the operetta format allows for a more playful atmosphere. Unlike tragic operas, an operetta is defined by its light music and humorous dialogue, making it a perennial favorite for theatergoers. Nagel highlighted that the production features a cast of 30 local singers who have been working to master both the vocal and physical demands of the show.
Choreography plays a major role in this production, with Mottola tasked with getting the large cast in sync. A significant focus of the rehearsals has been teaching the performers how to waltz, a traditional dance style that Mottola says many in the current generation have not previously learned. He praised the cast for their musical aptitude, noting that their ability to count music has helped them pick up the intricate steps.
Local favorite Jenny Carey stars as the lead in the production. Nagel praised her ability to memorize complex dialogue and highlighted her powerful vocal range. The show also features Judy Russo in the role of Valencienne, with both lead actresses wearing costumes designed by master builder Derek Schipinski.
In addition to their work on The Merry Widow, both Nagel and Mottola are active members of the local arts community. Nagel is a prominent vocal teacher in the Coachella Valley who focuses on technical vocal training, while Mottola teaches over 20 dance classes a week at various centers including the Mizell Center in Palm Springs and the Joslyn Center in Palm Desert.

A troubling history is coming to light in a Palm Desert husband’s death. 65-year old Vicky Kim is accused in the death of her husband — but prosecutors say she had previously faced several domestic violence cases involving him.
