Jilly Rizzo: Remembering Frank Sinatra’s Best Friend and the Tragic End of a Desert Legend
Jilly Rizzo was more than just a restaurateur; he was the trusted right-hand man to Frank Sinatra, arguably the world's most beloved entertainer. In a special "Desert in a Minute" segment, NBC Palm Springs' Steve Sumrall remembers the man who bridged the gap between Manhattan's nightlife and the tranquil luxury of the Coachella Valley, eventually becoming a permanent part of the Sinatra legacy.
Rizzo first rose to prominence in the 1960s as the owner of Jilly's Saloon, a legendary celebrity haunt on 52nd Street in Manhattan. It was in this popular lounge that Rizzo met Sinatra. Bonding over their shared Italian-American backgrounds and similar upbringings, the two men formed an immediate and unbreakable friendship that would last for over thirty years.
It was Sinatra’s influence that eventually brought Rizzo to the West Coast. Persuaded by "The Chairman of the Board," Rizzo relocated to the Coachella Valley to try his hand as a restaurateur in the desert. His distinct personality also made him a television and film fixture, appearing on the hit show Laugh-In and securing cameos in films like Cannonball Run 2, Year of the Dragon, and The Pickup Artist.
Rizzo’s loyalty was perhaps most visible in February 1981. He served as a crucial character witness before the Nevada Gaming Board when Sinatra applied to renew his gaming license, which had been revoked 17 years earlier due to alleged associations with criminal figures. Rizzo testified to their 22-year association, steadfastly defending Sinatra’s character and social conduct before the state authorities.
The later years of Rizzo’s life were marked by legal trouble. In 1990, he was convicted alongside five other men in an $8 million bank fraud scheme. However, citing his age and declining health, a judge spared him prison time, instead sentencing him to 1,000 hours of community service. It was a reprieve that allowed him to remain in the desert he had grown to love.
Tragically, Rizzo’s life came to a violent end in Rancho Mirage on May 6, 1992—his 75th birthday. Just hours before his scheduled birthday celebration, Rizzo’s white Jaguar was broadsided by a speeding drunk driver in a Mercedes. The impact was so severe that Rizzo was killed instantly, and the vehicle was engulfed in flames, leaving him burned beyond recognition.
Today, Jilly Rizzo rests in the Sinatra family plot at Desert Memorial Park in Cathedral City. He was joined there six years later by his best friend, Frank Sinatra, ensuring that the two men who were inseparable in life remain together in the history of the Coachella Valley.

A troubling history is coming to light in a Palm Desert husband’s death. 65-year old Vicky Kim is accused in the death of her husband — but prosecutors say she had previously faced several domestic violence cases involving him. The Riverside County District Attorney’s Office says it had secured protective orders against Kim before a judge later resolved her cases as misdemeanors, released her from custody and terminated those orders. Now, Kim is expected to be arraigned in connection with her husband’s death. Court records allege the weapon used was a flagpole.
