U.S. Energy Storage Industry Commits to 100% American-Made Grid Batteries by 2030
The U.S. energy storage industry has announced an ambitious goal: to supply 100% of the country’s grid-scale energy storage projects with American-made batteries by the year 2030.
Noah Roberts, Vice President of Energy Storage for the American Clean Power Association, joined NBC Palm Springs to break down what this means for the future of power, jobs, and manufacturing.
“America needs more power now than ever before,” Roberts said. “Battery energy storage is essential to ensuring our power grid remains reliable and affordable—and California is leading the way.”
According to Roberts, California currently has more than 12 gigawatts of operational energy storage and another 10 gigawatts in development or construction. That’s enough to power hundreds of thousands of homes and businesses, and it’s fueling investment in domestic battery manufacturing.
The industry plans to invest over $100 billion in U.S.-based grid battery manufacturing over the next five years, creating more than 350,000 jobs. California alone already employs over 50,000 people in the energy storage sector.
“These are high-quality, good-paying jobs—from machinists and technicians to software engineers and chemists,” Roberts said.
He added that grid batteries aren’t just helping households weather heat waves—they’re powering economic growth, particularly through high-demand users like AI data centers and new manufacturing hubs. “Every year, more and more grid batteries are being deployed, and that’s driving U.S. manufacturing at record pace,” he noted.
