Jack Black Enters the Blocky World of Minecraft in New Movie Hitting Theaters
A blockbuster video game is breaking into the real world — and the big screen. The Minecraft movie, based on one of the best-selling video games of all time, arrives in theaters this weekend, and it’s shaping up to be more than just a nostalgic trip for gamers.
Jack Black leads a star-studded cast that’s been fully immersed in the pixelated universe of Minecraft, bringing humor and heart to the film. “This place makes no sense,” his character says in a moment of classic Minecraft mayhem. “Don’t I know it.”
Directed by Jared Hess, known for his quirky, heartfelt comedies, the movie aims to be as tactile and immersive as the game itself. “A lot of our sets were built practically,” said one cast member. “It helped us interact with everything — touch things — which really brought the performances to life.”
From full-scale Minecraft forests to entire villages built on set, the filmmakers embraced the challenge of transforming the blocky digital world into a lived-in cinematic experience.
Before filming, the cast dove deep into gameplay to better understand the world they were recreating. “It took a few days of hardcore study,” one actor shared. “But once I cracked the code, I could finally talk Minecraft with my kids.”
Another cast member said, “I knew the old stuff, but I had to refresh myself on everything new they’ve added.”
The movie captures the spirit of Minecraft — a place where creativity meets community. “You can escape real life, build anything you imagine, and share that experience with others,” said one actor. “It’s uplifting in a time when we all need a little escape.”

Palm Springs firefighters responded Thursday to a report of a person struck by lightning in the Chino Canyon area. The person was transported to a hospital for medical treatment. Firefighters also responded to a palm tree fire in Chino Canyon that officials say was caused by an apparent lightning strike. Estevan Figueroa of King’s Club Barbershop is giving back across the Coachella Valley — one haircut at a time.
