New Films Hit Theaters: Supernatural Drama 'Sinners' and a Heartfelt Remake of 'The Wedding Banquet'

It’s a big weekend at the box office, with two standout films making waves: a gripping supernatural drama and a heartfelt romantic comedy remake.

In Sinners, director Ryan Coogler—known for his work on Black Panther and Creed—ventures into the supernatural genre for the first time. Teaming up once again with actor Michael B. Jordan, the film explores deep-rooted social injustices through a haunting story set in the Jim Crow-era South.

Jordan plays dual roles as twin brothers returning to their hometown, only to discover a terrifying evil lurking beneath the surface. Coogler blends blues and jazz influences with eerie, atmospheric storytelling, crafting what Manny the Movie Guy calls “stylish, captivating, and totally entertaining.”

“For me, this was a love letter to cinema,” Coogler said in press interviews.

Manny gives Sinners a glowing four out of four “they only come out at night” kisses, calling it “the perfect film to start your weekend.”

Also hitting theaters is a reimagining of Ang Lee’s 1993 classic, The Wedding Banquet. Directed by Andrew Ahn, this modern take brings the original’s themes into a contemporary setting, blending humor, heart, and cultural commentary.

Bowen Yang stars as Chris, who is planning a wedding with his partner Min, played by Han Ji Chan. Their story is surrounded by a loving but complicated family, portrayed by a stellar cast including Oscar nominee Lily Gladstone, Kelly Marie Tran, and Academy Award winner Youn Yuh-jung from Minari.

“This is a story about love—both romantic and familial,” said Ahn. “It’s about creating space for yourself, for your identity, and for joy.”

Manny praised the film’s emotional depth and ensemble cast, especially its climactic banquet scene, calling it “short of a miracle.”

He gives The Wedding Banquet three and a half out of four “kisses”, urging viewers to say “I do” to this beautiful film.

Catch both films now in theaters.

A troubling history is coming to light in a Palm Desert husband’s death. 65-year old Vicky Kim is accused in the death of her husband — but prosecutors say she had previously faced several domestic violence cases involving him. The Riverside County District Attorney’s Office says it had secured protective orders against Kim before a judge later resolved her cases as misdemeanors, released her from custody and terminated those orders. Now, Kim is expected to be arraigned in connection with her husband’s death. Court records allege the weapon used was a flagpole.
