A Look back at the "Man of Steel"

James Gunn's "Superman" arrives in theaters this weekend, marking the latest chapter in the Man of Steel's extensive big screen history spanning over seven decades.

The Last Son of Krypton first appeared in feature-length form with 1951's "Superman and the Mole Men," starring George Reeves, who would later portray the character on television. This early adventure laid the groundwork for Superman's enduring presence in cinema.

Christopher Reeve's iconic portrayal began with 1978's "Superman," launching a blockbuster series that included "Superman II," "Superman III," and "Superman IV: The Quest for Peace." Reeve's memorable performance established many of the character's most beloved big screen moments.

After a lengthy hiatus, Superman returned in 2006 with "Superman Returns," featuring Brandon Routh stepping into the cape and boots. The film served as both homage to and continuation of the Christopher Reeve era.

Henry Cavill brought a darker, more modern interpretation to the role starting with 2013's "Man of Steel." This version continued through "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" (2016) and "Justice League" (2017), forming part of the DC Extended Universe.

Now in 2025, David Corenswet takes on the mantle of Superman in James Gunn's new interpretation. He's joined by Rachel Brosnahan as investigative reporter Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult as the villainous Lex Luthor, promising to bring fresh energy to these classic characters while honoring Superman's rich cinematic legacy.
