Summer 2025 Lacks a Clear Song of the Summer as Charts Stay Low-Key

The summer of 2025 has yet to produce a breakout “song of the summer,” with music charts leaning heavily toward mellow and low-energy tracks instead of upbeat party anthems.

Last year’s season was dominated by high-energy hits and breakout stars like Charli XCX and Sabrina Carpenter. This year, however, the Billboard Hot 100 top 10 is largely made up of slower tracks. Alex Warren’s ballad “Ordinary” sits at No. 1, with other charting singles from Morgan Wallen and Justin Bieber following a more subdued tone.

“There’s a lot of good music right now, but it’s not the kind that lights up a room,” said Mike Errico, a songwriter and instructor at NYU’s Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music. “A lot of what 2025 has come out with — they’re kind of down, kind of low energy. It’s good, but it’s not going to light up a room.”

While viral hits like PinkPantheress’ “Illegal” have gained momentum on TikTok, they have not stayed long on the charts. Older songs, including 2024 hits like Shaboozey’s “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” and Kendrick Lamar’s “Luther,” continue to hold strong positions, signaling that last year’s music still resonates with listeners.

Errico noted that 2024 was an exceptional year for big hits and may have set a high bar. “Maybe music needed this minute to chill,” he said. “Let’s let everybody digest it and come back strong next summer.”

With new albums from Sabrina Carpenter, Tyler, The Creator, and Chappell Roan still to come, there’s a chance a late entry could define the season. For now, summer 2025 appears to be coasting on the momentum of last year’s music rather than creating a new anthem of its own.
