‘Hacks’ Storyline Mirrors Real-Life Shakeups at Colbert and Kimmel’s Late-Night Shows
Sometimes art and life reflect one another more closely than expected. This week, Jean Smart’s role on HBO Max’s “Hacks” has taken on new significance following major disruptions in the late-night television world.
ABC announced the indefinite suspension of “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” after comments the host made about the suspected killer of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. Shortly after, Smart posted on Instagram to support Kimmel, writing, “What Jimmy said was FREE speech, not hate speech,” and questioning the state of the country’s commitment to open expression.
Smart had just won another Emmy for her portrayal of comedian Deborah Vance on “Hacks,” where her character recently achieved her dream of hosting a network late-night show. Despite hitting No. 1 in ratings, Vance walks away after being pressured by network executives to fire her head writer, Ava Daniels (Hannah Einbinder). The storyline, released in May, has drawn comparisons to the real-life pressures comedians face amid financial and political scrutiny.
The parallels became even stronger after CBS announced the end of “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” citing financial concerns. Combined with Kimmel’s suspension, the industry shakeups echo Vance’s fictional on-air resignation about the challenges of balancing comedy, commerce, and integrity.
Clips of Vance’s speech from “Hacks” have resurfaced online, resonating with audiences who see its message as eerily timely. For many, the show’s exploration of the pressures facing late-night comedians feels less like fiction and more like a mirror of today’s entertainment landscape.
