Swift Strategy: Taylor Swift Files Trademarks for Voice and Likeness to Combat AI
Taylor Swift’s company, TAS Rights Management, filed three pioneering trademark applications with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office on Friday, April 24. These filings represent a major shift in how artists protect their identity, moving beyond traditional copyright to secure federal trademarks for voice and visual likeness.
Two of the applications are for "sound marks," covering the spoken phrases "Hey, It’s Taylor Swift" and "Hey, It’s Taylor." While trademarking a voice is a relatively new legal frontier, the goal is to prevent AI from using her specific vocal tone to deceive fans or endorse products without her consent.
The third filing focuses on her visual likeness, specifically describing a photograph of Swift on stage. The description includes her holding a pink guitar with a black strap, wearing a multi-colored iridescent bodysuit with silver boots on a pink stage. By trademarking this specific "look," her team can more easily target AI-generated images that attempt to mimic her signature performances.
This move follows a similar strategy used by actor Matthew McConaughey earlier this year. Because trademark law stops anything that is "confusingly similar," it offers a broader and more aggressive tool for celebrities to fight back against AI platforms than standard copyright law, which only protects specific existing recordings.
