Taylor Swift Files Trademark for Voice and Image to Counter AI Deepfakes
According to a report from Public News Service, Taylor Swift has filed new trademark applications for two voice clips and one image, a move legal experts say is specifically designed to protect the pop superstar from threats posed by artificial intelligence. These filings highlight the growing challenge AI poses to the entertainment industry as deepfakes and digital music clones continue to flood streaming platforms.
The applications, filed through her company TAS Rights Management, include "sound marks," a relatively rare category of trademark protection. One of the audio clips features Swift announcing her upcoming album, "The Life of a Showgirl," which is slated for release on October 3. Intellectual property attorney Josh Gerben noted that attempting to register a celebrity’s spoken voice is a new use of trademark law that has not yet been tested in a courtroom.
In addition to her voice, Swift is seeking to protect a specific visual likeness: a photograph of her on stage holding a pink guitar while wearing a sequinned outfit. This iconic look from her Eras tour is being used to bridge the "protection gap" in traditional copyright law. While copyright protects specific existing songs or videos, it often fails to guard against AI-generated content that mimics an artist's tone or persona without directly copying an existing recording.
This legal strategy follows a similar move by actor Matthew McConaughey and represents a shift toward using trademark law to combat AI platforms that generate "confusingly similar" content. By securing these marks, Swift’s team gains a broader tool to target unauthorized AI clones that attempt to use her signature voice or stage presence for commercial gain or deceptive endorsements.
