Dua Lipa Sues Samsung for $15 Million Over Alleged Unauthorized Use of Her Image
Pop superstar Dua Lipa is suing Samsung for at least $15 million, alleging the tech giant used her image on packaging for television sets sold across the United States without her authorization.
According to legal documents filed Friday in federal court in California, the lawsuit centers on a photograph of the Grammy-winning singer that allegedly appeared on cardboard boxes for Samsung televisions.
The complaint claims Lipa never entered into an agreement allowing Samsung to use her likeness and says the packaging falsely implied she endorsed or sponsored the company’s products.
Attorneys for Lipa argue the unauthorized use allowed Samsung to profit from what they describe as a false association with the singer.
The lawsuit alleges copyright infringement, trademark infringement, and violation of Lipa’s right of publicity. Her legal team says Samsung ignored repeated demands to stop using the image.
“Ms. Lipa holds highly valuable copyright, trademark and publicity rights in her name, image and likeness,” the filing states.
Lipa, who rose to global fame with hit songs including “Don’t Start Now,” “Levitating,” and “Physical,” has become one of the music industry’s biggest stars and has secured endorsement deals with major fashion and lifestyle brands.
In a statement to CNN, a spokesperson for Samsung said the company could not comment due to the ongoing legal proceedings.
