Ninth Annual Palm Springs Young Playwrights Festival Showcases Student Talent at Cultural Center
The next generation of theatrical voices took center stage yesterday afternoon as the ninth annual Palm Springs Young Playwrights Festival filled the Palm Springs Cultural Center with original stories, comedy, and drama. The annual showcase provides elementary, middle, and high school students throughout Riverside County with a rare opportunity to see their self-penned scripts transformed into live, professional staged readings.
To prepare for the big showcase, the selected student winners spent months participating in an advanced workshop series. They worked hand-in-hand with professional television writer and producer Greg Cope White, who served as this year's official mentor to help the students refine their dialogue and structure their scripts for a live audience. Each of the winning playwrights was then paired with accomplished directors and actors from the worlds of theater, film, and television to execute the final performances.
The diverse lineup of winning selections covered a broad emotional spectrum, ranging from moving dramatic pieces to lighthearted comedy. Among the featured works was The Rats of Broadway, a satirical comedy written by Jason Bulanek of Canyon Springs High School and directed by award-winning theater veteran Chuck Yates. Festival organizers noted that the sheer variety and caliber of the student scripts are what make the event a resounding success year after year.
The festival functions as both a creative launchpad and an educational support system. Beyond the invaluable experience of collaborating with industry professionals, each selected student playwright receives a 500 dollar scholarship and ongoing mentorship opportunities to help them continue pursuing arts education and creative storytelling.
For the young participants, the unique structure of the festival offers profound insights from multiple sides of the theatrical world. Several former winners returned to the Cultural Center this weekend to participate as actors in this year's readings, highlighting how the program fosters long-term artistic growth and stays connected to its alumni network as they advance their creative journeys.

Nearly a year after wildfires tore through Mountain Center, the scars are still visible along the Palms to Pines Highway. Now, fire crews are working to repair those burn areas and reduce the risk of flooding, erosion and mudslides when heavy rain arrives. The work includes fire-line suppression repairs, water bars and other measures designed to slow rainwater and keep burned soil from washing away.
