Chips, Hoagies, and Cartoons: It's a Cinco de Mayo Holiday Fiesta!
Happy Cinco de Mayo, Coachella Valley! NBC Palm Springs weatherman Jerry Steffen is taking a little detour from the forecast to bring you the latest edition of Hashtag Holiday Calendar and Pop Quiz, and today's lineup of holidays is one for the history books, the sandwich shop, and the Sunday comics.
First up: Cinco de Mayo
Today marks the anniversary of the Mexican army's stunning victory over the Second French Empire in 1862 It's one of the most festive days on the calendar, and the NBC Palm Springs crew was definitely feeling it.
And yes, it's also Cinco de Manny! Manny the movie guy is celebrating a birthday today, and this newsroom knows how to show some love.
More Holidays Worth Celebrating
The fun doesn't stop there. Today is also National Hoagie Day, a glorious occasion honoring that perfect overstuffed sandwich, whether you call it a sub, a grinder, an Italian, a torpedo, or a baguette. Get your hoagie on.
It's also Totally Chipotle Day, the perfect excuse to pile those smoky, dried jalapeño peppers onto, well, everything. Your hoagie, your Cinco de Mayo plate, your life.
And rounding out the day is National Cartoonist Day, celebrating the creative geniuses behind the cartoon strips and animated films that have made us laugh for generations. The date has meaning: it was on this day in 1895 that the very first cartoon strips appeared in newspapers. A true landmark in the history of art and storytelling.
