No Socks, Empanadas, and a Presidential Pop Quiz: It's a Holiday-Packed Friday on NBC Palm Springs
Friday, May 8th, 2026 is bringing the fun, and weatherman Jerry Steffen is here for all of it with the Hashtag Holiday Calendar and Pop Quiz, brought to you by One Coachella Valley.
First up, kick off your shoes and celebrate National No Socks Day. Think of it as a little freedom for your feet, and an excuse to let those toes breathe all day long.
Feeling hungry? Today is also National Empanada Day, a celebration of the beloved stuffed pastry with roots in Spain. The name itself actually translates to "to wrap in bread," and whether they're filled with savory meats or sweet fruit, there's an empanada out there for everyone.
And for dessert, National Coconut Cream Pie Day is on the calendar, honoring that creamy, whipped-cream-topped, toasted-coconut-finished classic. Enough said.
Rounding out today's holiday lineup is National Truman Day, a nod to the 33rd President of the United States, Harry S. Truman, who was born on this very date in 1884. And in honor of the occasion, Jerry brought not one but two
Truman-themed questions to the pop quiz table. Think you know your presidential history, and your Billy Joel? Put your knowledge to the test and see if you can answer today's questions:
1) Harry S. Truman was famously raised and schooled beginning at age six in a patriotically named American city. Which one was it?
A) Freedom
B) Independence
C) Liberty
2) Billy Joel's chart-topping 1989 single "We Didn't Start the Fire" opens with a rapid-fire string of references spanning history, culture, and pop culture. What is the very first lyric line in the song?
A) Harry Truman, Budapest, Alabama, Khrushchev
B) Harry Truman, Doris Day, Red China, Johnny Ray
C) Harry Truman, James Dean, Brooklyn's Got a Winning Team
Watch the video above to find out if the answers match what you were thinking, and tune in to NBC Palm Springs every morning for more holiday highlights and pop quiz fun with Jerry Steffen.
